THE LIONS DEN - Background composition ideas

The sick lion

Here are just some sketches of my thinking process. The inspiration is Monty Python and the holy grail bunny scene since it is essentially the same story.

So I started with the background and the sunset which I really like. Everything else is just blocked in with local colors, I still plan on tweaking everything to play with the color scheme. I still need to add another light source I think, since it wouldn't make any sense for the workers to be working without any light.

slightly unsaturated version. I prefer this version.

For some reason this showed up on blogger extremely saturated. 

Textures and patterns

Sooo I struggled coming up with pattern ideas for this project. Here are some of my texture and pattern ideas.

let there be light!

Playing with lighting. I'm not too keen on the the natural light from the back, but maybe that will change once I start adding shadows

Notes: add orange highlights on large character. Create a second blue light source from the bottom left corner? Create shadows and highlights. Rearrange color gradient from light source to large character, mainly fix the middle purple value.  Play with tunnel value range. Add more color to border color. Keep asymmetrical crop, maybe exaggerate asymmetry.
